How to get a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends Z-A
Where to find a Metal Coat in Lumiose City.
The Metal Coat is an illusive item in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, in that you likely won't find it right away. That's because the item – which is necessary for evolving specific Pokémon – is only available as part of two late-game Side Missions, or from a specific NPC who you'll have to grind to unlock.
To make sure you don't miss out on the evolutions tied to this item, here's how to get a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including how to use a Metal Coat.

How to get a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
There are three ways in which you can get your hands on the Metal Coat item in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and sadly none of them are early-game.
Two of them are exclusively tied to late-game Side Missions, while a third option becomes available during the endgame, and it'll cost you. Fortunately, there's no shortage of money in Lumiose City!
Here's how to get a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A:
- Side Mission 101 - Steadfast as Steel
- Side Mission 114 - A Feather from Skarmory
- Purchase at Racine Construction
Outside of Side Missions, you can purchase the Metal Coat from an NPC in Racine Construction. This will cost you $4,980 per Metal Coat. The NPC also appears to have an unlimited supply of Metal Coats, allowing you to buy as many as you need from him.
How to use a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you need a Metal Coat for evolving two Pokémon through Trade Evolutions. Trade Evolutions are evolutions you can get only via trading, but in some instances, a Pokémon will need to be traded while holding a specific item in order to evolve.
Here are the Pokémon that need a Metal Coat to evolve:
- Evolves Onix into Steelix (if held while trading)
- Evolves Scyther into Scizor (if held while trading)
It's definitely worth getting your hands on both Steelix and Scizor. Not only do you need them to complete the Pokédex, but they both have Mega Evolutions you can make use of.
Good luck getting a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
