Mega Shards are clumps of purple crystals found throughout Lumiose City in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

While the purpose of Mega Shards remains a mystery during the opening of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you'll soon come to learn that these little rocks are one of the game's most important currencies. For, without them, you won't be able to get many of the Mega Stones!

This means it's an excellent idea to know the best Mega Shard farming locations and where to use Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Where to farm Mega Shards: Best Mega Shard farming locations in Legends Z-A

Before I get into the best farming spots for Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, there's a few things you need to do to max out your shard yield. The first is fully upgrading the Pink Canari Plush as it will increase the amount of Mega Shards you'll earn! You can do this by talking to the construction worker standing outside Racine Construction.

It will take 16 Colourful Screws to fully upgrade the Pink Canari Plush and we've got a guide covering the Colourful Screw locations.

Next up, you need to ensure you have the right Pokémon for Mega Shard smashing. This ideally needs to be a Pokémon who can reach great heights while your trainer is stuck on the streets. Ideally, the Pokémon should also be able to use moves with large area-of-effects, such as Surf, to increase the amount of Mega Shards they can smash at one time.

Personally, I found both Dragonite and Gyarados to be perfect for Mega Shard farming. Since they both have the ability to fly (yes, Gyarados can fly), they reach the Mega Shard clumps stock high up on buildings. Both Pokémon also have the ability to use Surf!

It's important to note that Surf is one of the many TMs in Legends: Z-A and you can learn its locations in our all TM locations guide.

Finally, Mega Shard clumps take roughly between five to 10 real-world minutes to respawn. Once you've completed one of the farming methods I've outlined below, take a little break from Mega Shard destruction, like taking the time to visit a Wild Zone, before returning to smash more shards. You may also find it helpful to progress to the next in-game day.

Now onto the farming methods!

Surrounding Hotel Z

Hotel Z is your base in Legends: Z-A and it's also surrounded by some very good Mega Shard farming locations.

The first will be introduced to you at the beginning of the game as it's where Urbain / Taunie introduces you to the rooftops of Lumiose City. To reach it, climb the ladder to the right of Hotel Z. Afterwards, head straight forward and cross the small bridge to find a collection of Mega Shard clumps. Don't forget to head up the stairs for even more!

Once you're done, turn around and go back across the bridge before looking to your right. It's important to note that you will need to be able to Roto-Glide for the next Mega Shard locations.

Roto-Glide across the gap and then climb onto the green roof. From there, you can drop down into a courtyard containing a good number of Mega Shard clumps. Before this, however, you can always climb the nearby ladder and smash the Mega Shard clumps on the rooftops surrounding Hotel Z. There won't be many, but every clump is worth it.

Alleyway behind Restaurant Le Yeah

To reach this location, fast travel to either Restaurant Le Yeah or Quasartico Inc. which is across the road from said restaurant. The alleyway you want to visit is the one directly behind Restaurant Le Yeah and can be easily reached by taking the first right north of it before taking the first right again.

Once there, you'll see that the walls are completely lined with Mega Shards! You will need a Pokémon who can reach such heights, but it's definitely worth it!

Wild Zone 9 rooftops

After unlocking Wild Zone 9 by completing Main Mission 9 - 'Chase That Mysterious Pokémon', you'll find that some of its rooftops are completely littered with Mega Shards.

To reach these rooftops, enter the Wild Zone by its north-eastern entrance and follow the path until you reach a set of stairs on your left. This won't take you long to reach at all and you'll know you're in the right place when you see a Kadabra.

Go up these stairs and climb the ladder to discover yourself surrounded by Mega Shards. There will be another nearby rooftop which is equally covered and thankfully you can easily reach it from your current position.

While you're at Wild Zone 9, it's worth popping over to the building directly right of it as there's a good collection of Mega Shards there too. You can reach this rooftop by taking the Holovator in Magenta Sector 3 and then running left-wards across the rooftops.

Main campaign exclusive farming methods

There are two Mega Shard farming methods that are exclusive to the main campaign of Legends: Z-A. Even though you won't be able to use them during the post game, it's still worth knowing them if you're still enjoying the main story of Z-A!

The first is one you've probably already noticed - Lumiose Tower. An increased number of Mega Shards will appear on the wall surrounding Lumiose Tower and, if you've been working on upgrading the Pink Canari Plush, then you can easily earn a large amount of Mega Shards by smashing them all.

I won't spoil what happens, but it's important to note that the walls surrounding Lumiose Tower will not be in the post game. This means this easy Mega Shard farming method will vanish in the post game.

The second method is exclusive to the Main Missions for Rogue Mega Evolutions. When you find a Rogue Mega Evolution, you'll notice that there will be an increased amount of Mega Shards surrounding it. This means it's the perfect time to get smashing and collect as many shards as you can.

Just keep in mind that, while these Mega Shards will be available both before and after the Rogue Mega Evolution fight, they will most likely despawn when you leave this section of Lumiose City. Grab them while you can!

Where to use Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends Z-A

Mega Shards are spent at the Quasartico Mega Shard Exchange found inside Quasartico Inc. You won't, however, be able to exchange Mega Shards until you've unlocked the exchange after completing Main Mission 10 - 'The Secrets of Mega Evolution'. After this point, new items (typically Mega Stones) will be added to the exchange after you've progressed past certain Main Missions.

Here's a complete list of everything in the Quasartico Mega Shard Exchange, along when each item unlocks:
