TMs explained: How do TMs work in Legends Z-A?

In the Pokémon universe, TM stands for Technical Machine and they're one of the long running items present in every single mainline Pokémon game. Each TM is connected to a specific attack and using one on a Pokémon teaches it said attack. Yet, there are a couple of rules you need to follow.

Firstly, TMs can be used multiple times in Legends: Z-A. This means you're free to use a single TM as many times as you like on as many Pokémon as you like. You're even able to replace a move taught by TM with a different attack and then use the TM on the same Pokémon at a later date.

You'll also be told if a Pokémon already knows a TM move. | Image credit: Eurogamer/Nintendo

Secondly, each TM can only be used on specific Pokémon. This is decided by the type of both the Pokémon and attack offered by the TM. For example, Water-type TMs can be used on Water-type Pokémon, but Electric TMs can not. There are the odd exceptions but each TM does generally follow this rule. There's also a few Pokémon which can't learn moves from TMs at all - though the number is very small.

Thirdly, if your Pokémon already knows four moves, then the TM will have to replace one. Due to this, you should always take your Pokémon's full moveset into account when teaching them a TM move. You wouldn't want to remove anything useful…

Finally, TMs are used by selecting them in your Satchel. A little blue tick mark will appear beneath the Pokémon in your party if they're able to learn this TM. A grey tick means the Pokémon already knows the move, while a grey 'X' means the Pokémon can't learn the move.
