A 360 pad, white, over a graphic showing a 360 base and 360 elite console. In the corner, an ident that reads "20 years of Xbox 360".

When something is 20 years old it's easy for memories to focus on the best things. The Xbox 360, Microsoft's best attempt at shaking up the games industry, wasn't perfect (hello RROD, hello a pivot to Kinect), but it's a console that for many is remembered as their console - the one that arrived at just the right time and offered exactly the right experiences.

A spaceship from the video game Starfield thunders through space towards a large STOP sign.

In the grand tradition of playing the latest Obsidian game and thinking about how Bethesda would have done it worse, or better, The Outer Worlds 2 has got me thinking a lot about its same-publisher cousin Starfield which, for reasons, has left a lot to be desired.

Two Xbox 360s, one black, one white, seen on a green background with the words "20 years of Xbox 360" written around them.

Wow, it's hard to believe it's been 20 years since the Xbox 360 released and gave the games industry a proper shake-up. With SEGA gone as a platform holder and Nintendo floundering as Sony seized power, Xbox took its opportunity to get the jump on PlayStation, releasing the Xbox 360 as the first console of that generation a year before the PS3 (and in some territories, that gap was even bigger). And it worked. Xbox 360 got off to a flying start, backed by some brilliant exclusive games and an industry leading online multiplayer offering.

An overlay that says '20 years of the Xbox 360' over the top of a car and 2 360 consoles.

Xbox 360 at 20 | The Xbox 360 car crash that didn't foretell the generation… or did it?

Sometimes events are just events, and don't mean anything at all.

November 2005. I'd just turned 23 - not long out of university and about to push forward with my career in games media properly by moving into a house/office in an attempt to make something out of what was to become VideoGamer.com (don't visit it now, I warn you). This was, it's not hyperbolic to say, one of the most important moments in my life. It was also about to be the first major new console launch of my career. What could go wrong?

Sony WH-1000XM6 on a desk

When I travel, I always bring a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. I pretty much have to. To listen to music and to block out as much of the outside world as possible. I'm quite fortunate in the job that I do that allows me to basically take a different pair of headphones or earbuds every time I go, and I think I've found the pair that'll be sticking with me in the meantime.

Skies of Arcadia artwork showing the main characters in front of a blue pirate flag overlooking the skies

Usually, I'd start one of these retrospective things with a wiggly line transition to the past for a bit of the old nostalgia-tickling scene-setting. The trouble is, my one overriding memory of Skies of Arcadia is so powerful I can barely remember anything else about the game at all. I can't, for instance, recall where I was when I played it, or even when; and I'm certainly not going to be able to tell you what it was about in anything but the broadest strokes without a trip to Wikipedia. What I do know, though, is Sega's beloved RPG - set in a vibrant world of swashbuckling skybound pirates - was brilliant. And I can say this with absolute certainty.

Blackbeard stands afore his ship in Civ 7.

It's fair to say that upon its initial release, Sid Meier's Civilization 7 rather split opinion. I don't think anybody would argue that it was the best-ever Civ game out of the gate. Nobody sane would, anyway. But for a breadth of opinion you only need look at my review on VG247 when compared to the verdict here on Eurogamer. On release, those two opinions were two stars and worlds apart. One considered the game to have a fundamental problem, being too boring. The other considered the base release a creaky but firm-enough foundation for a new generation of Civ.

Five pairs of wireless earbuds on a gradient background

Tech | Are premium wireless earbuds all that different in 2025?

Putting five interesting pairs to the test.

If there's one area of tech that's exploded in recent times. It's wireless earbuds with noise-cancelling powers. We've seen all sorts of options emerge up and down the price ladder from both established audio players and newcomers, and here I thought I'd put a few premium pairs I've looked at to the test and come to a conclusion of whether any of them are much different and worth your time.

Rear of of Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro and Poco F7 Pro

Tech | How good are budget Android phones in 2025? Xiaomi Redmi Note 14 Pro and Poco F7 Pro reviewed

Two excellent value options that come with some unexpected compromises.

Over the last few years, we've seen a real explosion in true mass market Android phones that match flagship phones spec-for-spec without too many apparent sacrifices. Indeed, for a while now, when someone has come to ask for a phone recommendation, I've suggested they buy a budget to mid-range headset with a good OLED screen, a decent set of cameras and long battery life. At the end of the day, that's what's important to most folks.

An image of Earth in space, but the surface of our blue planet has been overlaid by the face of a glasses-wearing man, who is Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG.

Feature | Did you know Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, the creator of PUBG, wants to remake the internet?

"I want to do Earth-scale planets with millions of players."

It's safe to say that Irish video game maker Brendan Greene, known by the alias "PlayerUnknown", is an ideas man. He's credited with creating and popularising the battle royale genre, initially experimenting with it in an Arma 2 mod, then building it into zombie game H1Z1, before making the extraordinarily successful multiplayer shooter PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - or PUBG as we know it now. Big ideas are irresistible to Brendan Greene, and few ideas come bigger than the one he currently has, to remake the internet.
