How to evolve Onix in Pokémon Legends Z-A
To evolve Onix into Steelix you need to take part in a Trade Evolution while your Onix is holding a Metal Coat in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. At the time of writing, this is the only way you can obtain a Steelix.
Remember, there are a few ways you can get a Metal Coat but you'll need to progress quite far through the game's story - or into the post-game - to get them.
Once you’ve got a Metal Coat, take it out of your Satchel and give it to your Onix to hold while it’s in your party. Then, you need to take part in a Trade Evolution with the Pokémon that’s holding the item. When you’ve completed the Trade, the person receiving the Onix will have it evolve into Steelix.
If you’re struggling to find someone to Trade with, you can always use a Trade Code. Just remember to be wary when trading with strangers, as not everyone will play by the rules and you may not get your Pokémon back!
Of course, to evolve an Onix you first need to catch one! Here are all the places you can find Onix in Lumiose City:
- Wild Zone 14 - Appears on the northern and eastern sides, or near holes around the Zone.
Here's a map of the Wild Zone too:
That’s all for now! Good luck evolving Onix into Steelix.
