Urbain and Taunie Pokémon choices in Pokémon Legends Z-A
No matter who your rival is in Pokémon Legends Z-A, they will always choose the remaining two Pokémon after you’ve chosen your starter while getting your travel bag back.
For example, if you’ve chosen Chikorita as your starter Pokémon then Taunie or Urbain will have Totodile and Tepig as their Pokémon throughout the story. Which, in a way, is useful because you’ll always know who you’re going up against.
First Urbain or Taunie battle strategy in Pokémon Legends Z-A
Your first battle with your rival will be shortly after you arrive at Hotel Z for the first time and they teach you how to roll.
Remember, depending on who you chose as your starter, your rival will one of the different combinations of Pokémon below:
| Starter Choice | Rival's Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tepig | Totodile Chikorita |
5 | Water Grass |
Grass, Electric Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Totodile | Tepig Chikorita |
5 | Fire Grass |
Water, Ground, Rock Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Chikorita | Totodile Tepig |
5 | Water Fire |
Grass, Electric Water, Ground Rock |
For defeating Urban or Taunie, you will get 280 prize money.
This first battle is pretty calm, especially after getting through the Battle Zone earlier to get to Hotel Z!
Second Urbain or Taunie battle strategy in Pokémon Legends Z-A
You'll face your rival a second time during Main Mission 9 - 'The Secrets of Mega Evolution', just after AZ teaches you about Mega Evolutions. This battle is all about you learning how to Mega Evolve your Pokémon.
Remember, depending on who you chose as your starter, your rival will use one of the different combinations of Pokémon below and they will be the evolved form of the ones you faced before. They'll also have a new Pokémon they'll throw out near the end of the battle:
| Starter Choice | Rival's Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tepig | Croconaw Bayleef |
25 | Water Grass |
Grass, Electric Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Totodile | Pignite Bayleef |
25 | Fire/Fighting Grass |
Water, Ground, Rock, Flying, Psychic Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Chikorita | Croconaw Pignite |
25 | Water Fire/Fighting |
Grass, Electric Water, Ground Rock, Flying, Psychic |
| N/A | Mega Manectric | 26 | Electric | Ground |
For defeating Urbain or Taunie you will get 1,560 prize money.
We recommend starting the battle with the evolved form of your chosen starter to take on your Rival's first Pokémon, so if you chose Chikorita they should now be a Bayleef you can send out. As this battle is a higher level than before, you will also need to choose another Pokémon from your inventory, and we advise choosing any that match the weaknesses of your Rival's second Pokémon.
After dealing with your Rival's first two Pokémon, they will send out Manectric and instantly Mega Evolve them. Don't panic, because now is the time for you to Mega Evolve Absol. Once you've done this, the battle should be over in a few moves.
Final Urbain or Taunie battle strategy in Pokémon Legends Z-A
Your final showdown with your rival will be in Main Mission 36 - 'Prism Tower's Dark Turn'. Which yes, does mean you'll be waiting a while to face them again from your previous battle.
This time, your Rival will use a combination of new Pokémon and the evolved forms of the two starters you didn't choose right at the beginning of your adventure. The first time they'll use one of the starters is as their fourth Pokémon. Then, they'll use the last starter you didn't choose as their final Pokémon and they will Mega Evolve them. For example if you chose Chikorita (who should now be a Meganium), your rival can bring out a Feraligatr first and then use Emboar last:
| Starter Choice | Rival's Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N/A | Meowstic | 62 | Psychic | Bug, Ghost, Dark |
| N/A | Goodra | 62 | Dragon | Icel Dragon, Fairy |
| N/A | Avalugg | 62 | Ice | Fire, Fighting, Rock, Steel |
| Chikorita | Feraligatr or Emboar |
63 | Water Fire/Fighting |
Grass, Electric Water, Ground, Flying Psychic |
| Tepig | Feraligatr or Meganium |
63 | Water Grass |
Grass, Electric Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Totodile | Meganium or Emboar |
63 | Grass Fire/Fighting |
Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug Water, Ground, Flying, Psychic |
| N/A | Manectric | 63 | Electric | Ground |
| Chikorita | Feraligatr or Emboar |
64 | Water Fire/Fighting |
Grass, Electric Water, Ground, Flying Psychic |
| Tepig | Feraligatr or Meganium |
64 | Water Grass |
Grass, Electric Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug |
| Totodile | Meganium or Emboar |
64 | Grass Fire/Fighting |
Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug Water, Ground, Flying, Psychic |
For defeating Urbain or Taunie you will get 5,120 prize money.
Your Rival will bring out six Pokémon for this battle and they're all above Level 60 - if your Level doesn't match this then we recommend taking some time to Level up before taking them on. Fortunately, many of them share weaknesses.
The first three Pokémon they'll use are Meowstic, Goodra and Avalugg. They'll then bring out one of the evolved forms of the starters you didn't choose at the beginning. Then, you'll have a Manectric to deal with before your Rival lets out their sixth and final Pokémon. This Pokémon will be the last starter you didn't choose and your Rival will Mega Evolve them - so be ready!
Who are Urbain and Taunie in Pokémon Legends Z-A?
Urbain or Taunie are your rival in Pokémon Legends Z-A, now you’ll notice we said rival, not rivals. This is because you’ll only have one to face. If you’re playing as a girl, your rival will be Urbain. If you’re playing as a boy, your rival will be Taunie.
However, regardless of who your rival is their battles will still play out the same with the same Pokémon choices and stats.
